Why EEAT Matters More Than Ever in 2025

When I first started in SEO back in 2003, the rules were simple: stuff enough keywords on a page, get a few backlinks, and you had a decent chance of ranking on Google. Fast forward 20+ years and the landscape couldn’t look more different. Yet one thing has never changed: Google’s mission to serve the best, most trustworthy results to its users. And in 2025, that means one thing more than anything else: EEAT.

What is EEAT?

EEAT stands for Experience, Expertise, Authority, and Trust. It’s Google’s way of assessing whether a website deserves to be visible in search results. While SEO tactics come and go, EEAT has become the guiding principle for long-term success. Simply put, if Google doesn’t know who you are, what expertise you bring, and why people should trust you, it won’t send customers your way.

Why EEAT Matters Now More Than Ever

The online space has never been noisier. Between AI-generated content, shifting algorithms, and new ways of searching, it can feel overwhelming for business owners trying to keep up. But here’s the truth: SEO is not dead, it’s evolving. And EEAT is at the heart of that evolution.

Google doesn’t want thin, generic, AI-churned content. It wants proof that there’s a real human being behind the screen with the right experience and authority to give valuable answers. In 2025, this is the difference between a website that gets buried and one that brings in leads, enquiries, and revenue.

Breaking Down the Four Pillars of EEAT

Experience

Google looks for signs that you’ve actually done the thing you’re writing about. For example, a plumber writing a how-to guide on fixing a leaky tap has far more weight than a content writer who has never touched a wrench. Sharing case studies, client stories, and first-hand experiences helps demonstrate that you’re speaking from lived knowledge.

Expertise

Expertise is about credentials, qualifications, and depth of knowledge. Are you seen as an expert in your industry? This could be formal (degrees, certifications) or informal (years of practice, proven results). Adding detailed author bios, showcasing professional achievements, or being featured in reputable publications all signal expertise. If you’re an expert in your industry look at what you can do to show evidence that you are an expert,

Authority

Authority comes from recognition by others. Do other websites, people, or organisations point to you as a trusted source? This is where citations, backlinks, reviews, and media mentions come in. The more you’re referenced and recommended, the more authority Google assigns to you.

Trust

Trust is the foundation. Without it, none of the other factors matter. Do you make it easy for customers to contact you? Do you have transparent business information, clear policies, and consistent reviews? A business that hides its details or gets negative feedback won’t inspire trust, either from customers or Google.

How EEAT Shows Up in Real Life

I’ve seen first-hand how small tweaks aligned with EEAT can transform results. One client added detailed author bios to their blogs, started actively collecting Google reviews, and shared real client case studies on their site. Within weeks, their rankings lifted across multiple competitive keywords. Why? Because Google could clearly see who was behind the content, what made them credible, and why people trusted them.

These aren’t glamorous, shiny-object tactics. They’re practical, achievable steps that any business can implement to strengthen their visibility online.

Here an example of data from Google Search Console for a long-term SEO client through my agency Blue Cherry Online Marketing, this shows increases in Google Traffic once we started to add EEAT signals to their websites. This is a plumber who had resisted adding a detailed About Us page on his website, once we added this and also submitted this information to some other websites his rankings started to move.

EEAT

Human-First Content in the Age of AI

With AI-generated content flooding the internet, Google has doubled down on the importance of human-first content. That doesn’t mean you can’t use AI tools to help with drafting or research. But what matters is the unique perspective, lived experience, and real value you bring as a human expert.

Ask yourself: Can someone else in my industry say this better than me? Or is my perspective unique because of my experience? The answers should shape the way you create and share content.

Building EEAT into Your Website

If you want to stay competitive in 2025 and beyond, here are a few steps you can take right now:

  • Add detailed author bios to your blog posts and articles, this should appear at the bottom of the blog post so that if someone came to this post, they can see who you are and that you have the expertise to be writing the content.
  • Collect and display customer reviews (especially on Google), you can use a plugin such as Rich Plugins for WordPress.
  • Share case studies, testimonials, and examples of real work
  • Make sure your contact details and business information are easy to find (think bottom navigation and your contact us page)
  • Get mentioned in reputable directories, publications, and partner sites – you can read this blog on finding your competitors backlinks to get started when it comes to finding good quality niche directories.
  • Keep your website secure (HTTPS is a must)

None of these are quick hacks. They’re part of building a strong online footprint that proves to both customers and search engines that you’re the real deal.

EEAT Is Marketing 101

Here’s the thing: EEAT isn’t just about SEO. It’s marketing 101. If people don’t trust you, they won’t buy from you. All Google has done is formalise that principle into how it evaluates websites.

This means your online presence needs to reflect the same trust signals you’d show in person. Just like you’d display qualifications on your office wall, highlight testimonials in your proposals, or proudly share your track record in conversations, you need to do the same online.

The Future of SEO is Trust

After two decades in the SEO trenches, I can say with confidence: the businesses that win online are the ones that earn trust. Not just from their customers, but from Google too. AI may change the way people search, but it doesn’t change what they’re searching for: credible, trustworthy solutions.

That’s why I’m running two free masterclasses this September to help business owners cut through the noise and focus on what really matters. In the first, I’ll cover the fundamentals of getting more clients through SEO. In the second, I’ll dive deeper into EEAT, human-first content, and how to future-proof your online visibility.

Final Thought

SEO has never been about chasing shiny objects, it’s always been a long-term game and proving your value and building trust over time. In 2025, EEAT is the clearest framework we have for doing just that. The businesses that embrace it will not only survive the constant evolution of SEO, they’ll thrive.
